Search Me O God

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (Ps. 139:23-24).

From the past two devotionals we know that our God knows everthing about us."you know me" (139:1). Because he wanted his heart to be right before God, David asked Him for a "'divine examination." "Search me, O God and know my heart, test and know my anxious thoughts." David's requests of God are for Him to search his life and to show him everything...Even those things that he was not aware of. What it appears that he wanted was a completely honest and open relationship with God. He wanted God to make a complete search---"me,"--- "my heart."---"my thoughts," "my ways." He wanted nothing to get in the way of his communication with God. David said, "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened" (Ps.66:18).

Are we willing to have such a divine examination and scrutiny of our lives? "Search me and know my heart." True knowlege of self comes not from searching ourselves but from God searching us, for He knows our innermost being.

God may see a wrong attitude or bitter spirit in us that needs to be changed. We may have a spirit of complaining or criticism in us. We may be disobedient, self-willed or self-seeking. We need to allow God to reveal anything in our lives that is hindering our spiritual growth. He can not only reveal our weaknesses to us, but help us to overcome them.

Do we see what these verses are saying? We need to ask God to; "Search me." Am I willing for God to search me? "Know me." Know my heart, my life, even my thoughts. "Try(test) me." What are the results of the test on my life? "See me." Does He see anything in my life that displeases Him? "Lead me." Into the path of everlasting life, the way that leads to heaven.

Life is centerd around the things that have either temporal or eternal value. May our prayers be that we put our emphasis on those things that are eternal. That we live each day with eternity's values in view.

Have a great day...Make a difference... Love mark Phil. 4:11
