Being Spiritually Nourished

"Like newborn babes, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up (1 Peter 2:2).

If there was a way to measure our spiritual growth the past year, would we be satisfied? But as Satchel Paige claimed, "Don't look back, someone may be gaining on you." Instead of looking back, we should look forward to new opportunities for spiritual growth this year.

Peter uses an interesting metaphor here as an illustration of our spiritual growth. He compares the Word of God to milk. Just as babies depend on milk for growth, the Christian must depend on the Word of God for spiritual nourishment. In the words of the prophet Jeremiah, "When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name O Lord God Almighty (Jer. 15:16).

That glass of milk sitting before us does us no good. To be nourished, we must drink it. So it is with our spiritual food. we must do more than just want it...We must eat it. "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matt. 4:4). We can suffer from spiritual malnutrition if we do not feed regularly on the Word of God.

A healthy person has an appetite for food. A healthy Christian will have the desire for God's Word. Loss of appetite is a warning in our physical life. So it is also in our spiritual lives. If we have no desire for God's Word, there is a reason. A New Christian may ask why he or she has to read the Bible every day. "Why should God make me do that?" God does not make us read it. But if we do not spend time with Him through His Word, we are the real losers.

At Northfield, I have been doing a series of lessons from 2 Peter. Peter's last written words were, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (3:18). Where the Bible is read with eyes, heart, and mind, there life is changed. "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly" (Col.3:16)

Have a wonderful day....make a difference....Love mark Phil.4:11
