Finishing The Race As A Winner

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses" (Heb.12:1)

I thought that yesterday's devotional could be amplified on just a bit. The scripture implies that at the ancient games, spectators were eagerly watching as the runners ran their races. There are spectators (witnesses) watching us as we run our race of life. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses."

In the 11th chapter of Hebrews is the running "Hall of Fame." It is a list of God's family who have successfully completed their race. They started out just like us as ordinary people faced with the problems of their day. They encountered difficult circumstances. They emerged however, victorious, strong in their faith. I believe they are an example to all of us.

As we read through our Bibles, we can search for lessons we can learn from the lives of such witnesses. From Abraham we can learn the lesson of faith. When God called him to leave his home, he obeyed, even though he did not know where he was being led. Noah walked with God in the midst of a people about which God said, "The wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was evil continually (Gen 6:5). Elijah lived in close touch with God. He is an example of a great man of prayer.

From Martha's sister Mary we can learn the important secret of just sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to His Word. We are encouraged by the absolute trust of David, even when forsaken by those closest to him. Job can give us comfort in the times of heartache and sorrow that we have all encountered on our course. The words of the Apostle Paul offer instruction, correction, and inspiration, as they help make our race one of patient endurance.

As we study their lives we realize that they finished their race in triumph. They won because of their trust in the Lord. It is encouragment to me, knowing that as I, too, entrust my life to Him, He will take me across the finish line a winner. "But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Cor. 15:57)

Have a great day...Let your light shine for Him...Love mark Phil. 4;11
