Staying The Course

"And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Heb. 12:1)

Our race is not always easy. Even for the best conditioned runners there is somtimes a longing to "drop out." Discouragements may turn us aside. The Hebrew writer tells us however that we must run the race with "preseverance" (patience).

Many of us run in an irregular fashion. We may start out with a great burst of speed; but when the speed begins to wear off, we find it hard to keep going. The Apostle Paul gave us these words of encouragement, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Gal. 6:9).

In the Greek myth of the Princess Atalanta, the princess, a very swift runner, announces that she will not get married. Because she had so many suitors, she finally promised to marry the one who could beat her in a race. Many tried and failed. One day a young man challenged her to a race. Early in the race all could see that she was much faster than he was, and he was no match for her. Then he dropped a golden apple. As she stopped to pick it up he shot past her. She soon caught up and he dropped another and another. She stopped to pick of each of them. With every bit of speed he had, he crossed the finish line ahead of Atalanta, winning her as his wife. The brief delays had cost her the race.

Do we sometimes get so involved with our plans that we take our eyes off the goal? Satan may throw "golden apples" of prosperity, pleasure, or fame in front of us to throw us off course. Or we may become so weary that we are ready to give up. It takes the utmost of endurance to continue our race to the end. We must not quit when the going gets rough. "Because you know that the testing of your faith developes perseverance" (James 1:3). The BEST thing to remember is that we have One who runs the race with us and in Him we can persevere to the end.

Have a wonderful day...Make a difference... Love Mark Phil. 4:11
