The Water Of The Lord

"Then the Lord opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink" (Gen 21:19).

Abraham sent Hagar and her son (his son also) Ishmael away from his home and into the desert of Beersheba. As they wandered, they ran out of water, as the sun beat down upon them. When their last skin of water was gone, Hagar placed Ishmael under a bush in the shade. She went a distance away thinking, "I cannot watch the boy die," and wept. She had nothing left.

But God heard the boy crying and sent an angel from heaven to Hagar saying, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.....Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink." (Gen 21: 17,18,20). Their thirst was quenched as they drank from the well that God had provided.

We may find ourselves in a figurative desert, experiencing an intense thirst. We may try drinking from the human sources that will not quench it. Our drink may come from the bottles of wealth, friends, popularity, home , pleasures, or talents. They only provide a limited supply of water and are soon gone with our thirst still there. God has a well of water from which we may drink. It is the Water of Life. It has an unfailing supply, and always satisfies. To the Samaritan woman at the well Jesus said, "But whoever drinks the water I give him he will never thirst. Indeed the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4:14). It is a life-giving water that completely quenches our every thirst. It is available to us, but there is a condition....we must drink.

Are we drinking from the bottles of human supply that do not quench our thirst and runs out? Or do we drink from the Water of Life that never runs dry and always satisfies? "And the Spirit and the Bride say, "COME!" "And let him who hears say, "COME! "Whoever is thirsty let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life" (Rev. 22:17). It is eternal water...
