Getting To Know God

"Acquaint now yourself with him, and be at peace; thereby good shall come unto you" (Job 22:21).

There is a story out there about Mark Twain as he was visiting the Kaiser in Germany. Twain's little daughter was quite impressed with the whole thing and excitedly said to him. "Daddy, if it keeps on this way, soon there won't be anyone for you to get acquainted with but God." Today so few people really know God. There are many who know about Him on some level; but few have an intimate and close relationship with him; a friendship.

It was during a time of extreme turmoil in his life that Job was encouraged by Eliphaz to become acquainted (submit to) God. He had lost his family and possessions and his friend advised him, "acquaint now yourself with him." In sorrow and disappointment we also wait before God. He wants us to wait before Him with an attitude of submission that we may experience a deeper knowledge of Him. That we may really become acquainted with Him. It was in his deep affliction and suffering that Job got into this deep and intimate acquaintance with God. When he admits that God is testing him he says, "But he knows the way I take; When he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold" (Job 23:10).

Gold must come through the fire to become the pure and beautiful precious metal that it is. For all of the metals that we use to become useful to us, there is some process they must undergo, often extreme heat. The heat removes that which is not useful.

God does not promise us freedom from trials. But through each trial we are able to develop a deeper, purer, more intimate fellowship with Him. In the heat of affliction we can find our true beauty. The beauty of Him being burned into our lives.

Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me,
All His wonderful passion and purity;
May His Spirit divine all my being refine,
Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.
