Are You Committed?

"He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord let me first go and bury my father"" (Luke 9:59).

One day as Jesus was walking along with His disciples, a man said to Him, "I will follow you wherever you go"(v57). Jesus replied, "Foxes have their holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head" (v58). Jesus was saying that if you want to follow me there will be a price attached. It would not be a life of ease, comfort, or earthly gain. There will be a cost.

To another man Jesus said, "Follow Me" (v59). The man's response was, "Lord permit me first to bury my father" (v59). It is implied that he wanted to follow Jesus, but his aged father was not yet dead, and according to custom, he should return home to be with him until his death. Jesus did not get the top priority. Notice the words...."ME FIRST."

Another man also said that he would follow Jesus, "but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home" (v60). He was willing to follow, but wanted to postpone the time. He had other things to do first. Jesus answered, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (v62).

When the Lord call us to follow Him, we must consider our willingness to pay the price before we answer. "For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost" (Luke 14:28). Is it Jesus first or me first? Are we willing to follow Him whenever and wherever He leads? Or do we say that we have other priorities like possessions or plans or a comfort zone we like too much? If He is to be first, it must be in ALL areas of our lives. It must be a commitment. A commitment is more than a promise to do His will when our circumstances are just right, or when His plans do not interfere with ours.

Total commitment does not mean that we cannot have a home, family, friends, or earthly possessions. It DOES mean that Christ must be in His rightful place for everything in our lives to be in their rightful places. JESUS FIRST.

Have a great day...Let your light shine for Him Love mark Phil. 4:11
