Developing Spiritual Vision

"Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them" (2 Kings 6:16).

According to this story as it unfolds, the king of Israel is privy to everything the king of Aram is about to do. "but the prophet Elisha, who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom." (v 12). No, Elisha was not in the king's bedroom! The Aramean king sends horses and chariots to Dothan, where Elisha is, and surrounds the city. What the Aramean king failed to realize was that his forces were not very powerful against one who was in constant communication with God.

Elisha's servant lets him know that they were surrounded by an army with horses and chariots and said, "Oh, my lord, what shall we do" (v15). My guess is that he was expecting Elisha to be in panic mode. Elisha was not! He had a "spiritual vision and saw the great invisible host of God around them. He said, "Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." Elisha knew absolutely that the Aramean king's forces would be utterly ineffective against the resourses of the Lord.

Elisha then prayed that his servant might also have the spiritual vision to see these "invisible" soldiers. "Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha"(V17). Imagine!

Today we may be facing problems that have no visible solution. As we look at our situation with just our physical eyes, we may not see the solution. "Oh, my lord, what shall we do?" Instead of going into panic mode, we need to open our eyes of faith. We need to pray for "spiritual vision."..."Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." With our physical eyes we see the enemy, with our spiritual eyes we see our Lord ready to deliver us, trusting that He will surround us with His invisible host. "The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them" (Ps 34:7).
