"Humble Yourselves In The Sight Of The Lord"

"All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble...Humble yourselves, therefore under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time" (1Peter 5:5-6).

This passage says that God gives grace to the humble. It is not the only scripture that says this. If we look at the words of James in 4:6, he says the exact same thing. "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." I belive that these writers are talking about REAL HUMILITY. The Pharisees wanted people to know HOW HUMBLE they were. By their attitude they actually boasted about their humility. This is not the true humility that the Lord desires from us. It is also not the self-depreciating talk of some as they catagorize by list all of their weaknesses, failures and unworthiness. This also is not the humility being talked about here.

When we are truly humble, we are unconcious of it. We have no thought of self. Our realization is that all we have comes from the Lord. The humble are willing, no matter what their station in life, to take the lowest position. The truly humble give all the credit for their lives to God because they want Him to have the glory. Being really humble requirres us to empty ourselves. They emptier we get, the more room there is for Jesus. This brings us closer to Him and the closer we get the more we understand our dependence upon Him.

Paul, who had alot of reasons to be proud, considered everything "loss" compared to the "overwhelming gain of knowing Christ." In a prayer to his Lord David uttered, "Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all" (1 Chron. 29:11).

The grace we recieve through humility does have a "perk." It is that in "due time, he may lift us up."

Have a great Friday...Go out and make a difference...Love mark Phil. 4:11
