Making The Dress

"For it is God who works in you, to will and act according to his good purpose" (Phil. 2:13).

My mom worked in a dress shop while I was growing up. It is a fancy name for a "sweatshop." A man in the shop cut the material that would make up the garment from a pattern. The pieces would then be passed along in a kind of assembly line fashion. The parts would be sewn together, and the buttons and hooks and eyes would be added, until the dress was completed. It was quite a process.

God has a pattern for us. He begins it to fit the "fabric of our lives" To make the pattern fit, some rearrangement may be necessary. Some of OUR attitudes, wants and motives may have to be readjusted to make it fit. As the cutting begins, some parts may have to be cut out completely, and some may only need to be trimmed. After all, it is HIS garment, for HIS "good pleasure." The pieces of our lives have to be fitted together to complete His purpose. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Rom.8:28). His purpose here is His pattern.

God will add all of the "finishing touches," so that we will be a unique garment. A garment like no other. My mom worked in front of a big noisy machine. It may have been the one that sewed the parts together, or made the button hole. The machines did the work, but it took the power of a person to make sure that the machine did it right.

WE cannot make our lives according to God's pattern. It takes His power for that! Paul writes in Eph. 2:10, "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

The pieces wouldn't always go into the machine easily or correctly. A steady and knowing hand was needed. Sometimes we may not be willing to do His will. For whatever reason, we may rebel. God has even provided a way to make us to be will to be willing. "For it is God who works in you, to will and act according to his good purpose."

Do have a great day....Make a difference...Love mark Phil. 4:11
