Repechage

"The race is not to the swift or battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all (Ecc.9:11).

The word repechage is French. It literally means, "refishing" or "to rescue" or "save." In athletic competitions it is a way for a defeated team or athlete to advance into the tournament. It is a format especially used in rowing, where an athlete(s) can actually lose in the first round of competition and still advance to the semifinals. The "playoff system" in professional sports is a form of repechage.

Jesus did not come to save those who were perfect. He came to us who are in need. We all need a "second chance." (and a third and fourth) Jesus met with the unlovely. The tax gatherers needed another chance. The Pharasies thought they were doing it right and needed no more chances.

It is reassuring to know that our God loves us despite the warts of life. That he can "refit" us and use us for His good and glory. What we need to know is that we need a second chance to advance. By the grace of God are we saved, and none are truly deserving, but the Lord in His magnificance, "wants all to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth" (1 Tim 2:4).

Our Bibles are replete with those who got second chances to advance. Look at Zaccheaus, the Philippian jailor, the adulterous woman of John 8:4, David, Moses.....The list goes on and on.

Knowing that our God is willing to forgive and give us another chance, a question arises. "What will I do with my chance"? In the rowing competition, the second chance means only that. The athlete must continue to win to advance. If we want to advance in our lives we must make the absolute best of our chances. We must work hard to get to the next round and then the next.

Jesus took a group of illiterate fisherman, gave them another chance. They turned the world upside down with the message of Jesus and salvation. Will we make the best our second chance?

Have a great weekend and an uplifting worship tomorrow....Let you light shine....Love mark Phil. 4:11
