A Race Of Endurance

"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out before us" (Heb. 12;1).

I will share with you an experience I had last week in the bay. After a hard day of clamming, my day was done and it was time to head back in to count and sell my clams. A couple of minutes into my trip back, I encountered some engine problems. I was only able to go about 4mph. A 15 minute ride turned into a 2 hour grind. As I made my way homeward (very slowly) there was alot of time for reflection.

I kept on thinking of our lives in terms of a distance race rather than a sprint. There are so many many experiences that we encounter in this long race, some pleasant, and some not. It so important to realize that there is always the big picture to look at. If we allow the times of turmoil and hardship to drag us down, our lives will indeed turn into a grind rather than a race with a wonderful goal.

James tells us in the very beginning of his epistle to "consider it pure joy, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith developes perseverance. Perseverance must continue its work." (1:2-3).

Although I didn't like having to spend so much time after a tiring day, just getting back in, it was just a small ripple in the sea of life. I called Jane and had a really good conversation with her, and then called my son in Salt Lake City and shared my experience. It actually turned into a not so bad time. When we allow ourselves to keep the big picture in focus, the speed bumps lose their ability to slow us down.

An old Arab proverb says. "All sunshine makes a desert." We just can't let the pratfalls that are certainly going to happen cause us to lose faith...To allow small ant hills to turn into mountains...To lose the wonder of our real goals in life.

Life is good..God does love us...I left out part of that Hebrews scripture. The first part says, "Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, lets us throw off everything that hinders and the sins that so easily entangles."...Then we can "run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Its a long race...Lets enjoy it. Oh, by the way, the trip took so long that I got to view an absolutely beautiful sunset that I otherwise would not have seen.

Have a great week...Let your light shine for Him Love mark phil. 4:11
