Finding Some "Selah"

"To the Lord I cry aloud, and He answers me from His holy hill. Selah"

If you read the Psalms very much you find that word, Selah, at the end of alot of verses. If we know its meaning, we can get a greater appreciation and understanding for its use in scripture. Selah is a musical term. In Hebrew it means "rest," "pause," "a lifting up." In temple music there would be a rest for the singers while the instruments kept on playing. One translation of the word is to "pause and calmly think of that."

I am sure that all of you have gone on long car trips, maybe with your family. Along the way there are "rest stops." Maybe its to stop for gasoline, bathroom needs, or a snack. Maybe its just to "rest" for a bit before you continue on. God put "rests" in David's life so that he would pause and calmly think that God helped him. In the "rest stops" of his life, David came to know by experience that God has helped me....."pause and calmly think of that." Selah. David recognized here that God heard him and responded. In v 8 it says, "From the Lord comes deliverence. May your blessing be on your people."

In our lives, we are the singers. The music keeps playing, but we sometimes need a Selah. Maybe its a quiet time of meditation. Maybe its a quiet time of Bible reading. Maybe its a quiet time of Bible reading AND meditation. "and on His law he meditates day and night" (Ps 1:2). We may get our Selah in a quiet time of prayer. When a Selah is inserted into our lives, we can pause and calmly think of our Lord and how He has blessed us. We can be refreshed as we lift our souls to Him. God becomes more real when we spend quiet times with Him, and we gain a deeper appreciation of His goodness.

I hope that all of us get a Selah today....A time of rest and refreshment in which we can contemplate the goodness of Our Lord, the wonder that is our lives, and how they are related.

Have a wonderful day....Make a difference.. Love mark Phil. 4:11
