The Magic Mirror

"Do not merely listen to the Word, and so decieve yourselves. Do what it says."(James 1:22)

As we try to model Christian behavior in our lives, one of our worst fears is that we will become "do as I say" rather than "do as I do" examples. We love the expression, "walk the walk" It makes us feel so much better than, "talk the talk." Though knowledge of the Word is essential in our lives, it not in itself the measure of our spirituality. As we apply the Word into our lives and appropriate it, we become more what the Lord wants us to be.

A little later on in James 1, he says, "Anyone who listens to the Word and does not do it is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like" (v 23-24). These are such powerful words. None of us forgets the image we see in the mirror, like it or not. To contemplate that this is how God wants us to relate to His Word is sobering.

The Word of God becomes our "magic mirror." It shows to us exactly what and who we are. It shows all our faults and failures, along with our successes. As we look into it we ought to see another image. That image is the image of Christ. In Him we see what we OUGHT TO BE. If we look hard enough we ought to feel a transformation take place. The desire to be more Christ-like.

It is just not enough to hear what God has to say to us in His Word. As it is revealed to us, we need to become doers. Words are simply words if we do not back them up with action. Verse 25 finishes the thought. "But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it---he will be blessed in what he does."

The amount of God's Word that we do, is what we really know. Take another look into the magic mirror....
