The "Labor" Of Love

"We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thess. 1:3).

It can be an astonishment when we see what results come from the efforts that are powered by love. When Paul was writing this letter to his Christian friends in Thessalonica, he was writing to people who had begun to suffer persecution. Yet their love was such that they were not only surviving, but thriving! Paul was really delighted to pray for them and give thanks for the good things that were coming from their love. The work of these Christians was a work of faith, their labor a labor of love, and their endurance, an endurance of hope. The highest type of effort and sacrifice flow from these springs.

We need also to bring genuine love for God more to the center of our own motivation. If it is a true love, our labors will be acceptable to Him. We must be careful however, not to get lost in the warm glow of this love and be presumptuous enough to assume that it is not still His prerogative to say what is required of us. If the true worship of God comes from a spirit of love, it also comes from a respect for the truth. (Jn. 4:23-24)

As our reverence causes us to take God with all seriousness, how much difference it will make if our love causes us to seek Him with utter thankfulness. We should not trifle with our responsibilities, but also never forget the goodness of our God, that has made us want to accept these responsibilities.

When all is said and done, our labor will matter little if it is not done in love. "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and self-discipline" (2 Tim. 1:7).

"Love is a far better sustainer than fear. Fear enslaves, but love persuades. Love takes possession of our soul, and we begin to want goodness for itself. God is a kind and faithful friend to those who sincerely become his friend (Franois Fenelon)

Have a great day...Make a difference...Love mark Phil. 4:11
