Yard Sales - The Emotions Of Our Lives

"Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" (Prov. 4:23).

As I write, my wife and a friend are preparing for a "yard sale." (maybe you call it a garage sale in your part of the country) One of the basic differences between Jane and I is that I don't throw away anything. She finds it much easier to give, sell, or pitch things. As she was putting things on a table in our front yard a little while ago, I saw her wipe some tears from her eyes.(I'm supposed to be the emotional one) They just triggered some memories from our past, and there they were with a 50 cent tag on them.

God has given us many wondrous gifts. Some of them must be handled with care. Our minds or hearts are made of three basic faculties; the intellect, the emotions, and the will. In an ideal world, the three work together the good things for which we were created. The roles of the intellect and will are the easiest to fathom, are just a bit more easily understood. The exactitude of how our feelings work can be debated forever. In this confusion, we may lose the help that our emotions should give to us in life's most important facets.

In reply to the question as to which is the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus replied, "Love the Lord with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind" (Matt. 22:36). It is risky business to try to serve God with only one part of our minds. For example; the danger of zeal without knowledge.(Rom.10:2, obedience without love. (1Cor.13:1-3), and love without obedience. (John 14:15) We are encouraged to carry out with our will the things our intellect tells us to do. (Jas. 4:17)Throughout our Bibles we are encouraged to give our "whole hearts" to the Lord.

The truth is however, that we short-change ourselves when we leave something as important as our feeling out of our godliness. I believe, that in all practicality, we are fighting a losing battle when we leave our emotions out of our doing right. We must have them for a reason! They are meant to aid us in our relationship with our Lord! Without their help, life would be in black and white instead of color. If the "issues of life" spring from the heart, including the emotions the must be "kept with all diligence."

Discipline doesn't mean denying our emotions, it means using them to help us live for the glory of our Lord. Wipe away your tears dear, I'm wiping mine away now.

Have a great weekend, and a wonderful worship experience on His day. Love mark Phil. 4:11
