Real Compassion

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you" (Isa. 49:15).

Mother Theresa was one of the most powerful people in the world. I am sure that she did not look at it that way or would have used those terms, but she was. She was powerful in terms of what she was, what she did, and what she represented. Her power lied in a weapon that she possessed. The weapon was compassion. A weapon used against the evils of the earth. Compassion, more than any other quality, encourages people to be influenced. Influenced for the good.

Today's scripture tells us that God's love is just as tender as that of a nursing mother. It is also just as compassionate. A mother would sooner forget her nursing child than God would fail to act with compassion. Listen to God's love and compassion for His people in Hosea 11. "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son......I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love; I lifted the yoke from their neck and bent down to feed them." (1&4)

This is why the story of the Cross is so powerful. It is, from beginning to end, a story of compassion. Those who refuse to be moved by this compassion would only be hardened by any other means of influence. I believe compassion is God's chosen means to influence others. Unless they see the goodness in us, that moves us, how can we be an influence for them? To do that, we must be ready to do the same difficult thing that God did....We must be ready, when the time comes, to suffer with others and for others. Mothers may understand this more than anyone else.

Do not be fooled, and do not underestimate. It is hard to be compassionate. It requires that we go to others in their weakness, vulnerability, and loneliness, to help them. Go where we are not in our "comfort zone." To truly influence others, a compassionate spirit is a requirement. It does encourage them to be willing to be influenced for the good. After all, people do not care how much we know until they know how much we care
