Reading And Singing


"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God" (Col. 3:16).

It is good for us to sometimes step back and get and overview of how the Bible impacts our lives. Here at Northfield, we have an adult "Bible Club." We try to meet once a month in someone's home. We are reading our way through the Bible. We sit around and discuss the book(s) we have read.(we are on Job) In today's scripture, we are told to, "let the Word of Christ dwell you." This means that we must read it. Verse 15 gives us a little insight into what it brings to us. The Word should actually have a home in our hearts.

If we allow it to, it gives encouragement, comfort, spiritual strength, and even instruction for daily living. Paul wrote these words to Timothy, "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (3:16). If we really meditate on God's Word and assimilate it, into our lives, it becomes such a part of us that we unconsciously let it direct our daily walk.

There are some wonderful scriptures, that can inspire us, and keep us focused on thinking and doing right. One of the that jumps out at me is in the book of Philippians. "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable---if anything is excellent or praiseworthy---think about such things" (4:8). When your thoughts or actions are getting the best of you, this is a good verse to focus on. A kind of, "getting our minds right" push. I think that the person who lets the Word become a part of his life does not have the frenzied restlessness that we see in many people in our tension-filled world.

Finally, when we are happy about things we sing. maybe not out loud, but in our hearts, A Word-filled life should make us sing. If it dwells richly in us it wants to get out and impact those around us. "Teaching and admonishing one another with all wisdom, as you sing hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." A heart filled with peace and a mind fed by God's Word is a life filled with song...Keep on singing....
