Church of Christ

A Standard Of Perfection

"And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through him" (Col.3:17).

I don't know if kids do this anymore, but when I was young and a person wanted to swear an oath to you, it was always in someone's name. "I swear on my grandmother." If grandmother was dead, it went, "I swear on my grandmother's grave." I guess that this gave a certain amount of gravity to the oath. It was swearing on something that was perceived as sacred to either him or me.

God has given to us a guiding principle for our lives....It is doing everything as his representative. "Do it in the name of Jesus Christ." We are as Christians, wearing the name of Christ. The first part of the verse says, "And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed." That covers it all, does it not? All areas of our daily living, whether it is in our homes, schools, places of business, or neighborhoods. Whatever we do or wherever we are, we can't leave Him out of anything.

When we do it all in His name, as His representative, it will be our desire to please Him. Paul admonished us in 2 Cor. 5:9, "So we make it our goal to please Him in the body or away from it." It ought to be our goal and desire. When we do it all in His name, we will do it for His glory. "So whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do it for the glory of God" (1 Cor. 10:31). When we do it in His name, we will do it with the right motive. Jesus becomes our standard of perfection. Our words and deeds won't be in question because they are done with Him as our guide.

It might be easier if there weren't so many temptations, but that is what makes it worthwhile. The harder it is, the more satisfying it ought to be. Through the strength and power of Jesus, we can accomplish what we set out to. "For it is God who works in you to will and act according to His purpose" (Phil. 2:13)......"I can do everything through Him who gives me strength" (Phil.4:13).

We can attain, but not in our own strength. God will empower and enable us....All in His name.

Have a wonderful day...Make a difference.....Love mark Phil. 4:11
