Tempted And Tried

"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it"(1 Cor. 10:13).

My oldest son, who has a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, tells me this. If aspirin were discovered tomorrow, it would never be pass the tests necessary to be released to the public. In other words, with all of its possible drawbacks weighed in with its benefits, it would be deemed unsafe. New drugs must undergo rigid tests before they are put out on the market. Obviously, we want them to be safe along with beneficial. And then there's those law suits...It is my hope that the testing is done to prove their worth in the long run and to perhaps "tweak" them to make them safe.

One of the problems that a new Christian faces is that all of the things "outside" have not changed. All of the things that were temptations in his former life are still lurking. Hopefully we learn an important lesson here. God has a way of victory for us, to see our way through them.

The same word in the Greek language that is used for the word temptation is used for the term testing. The temptation part of the term is regarding yielding to that which is contrary to God's purpose. These temptations are not God-breathed, but are from Satan. God allows the testings and trials to come into our lives to prove us and help us to develop a strong Christian character.

Everyone undergoes the testings...We are not the only ones. Even though our temptations may be different, none is exempt. Kenneth Wuest, a noted twentieth century Greek scholar said this; "God in His wisdom plans the test, and limits the temptation. God in His love sends the test, and permits the temptation. God in His grace meets the test and overcomes the temptation."

God has provided our escape in the person of Jesus Christ. In our weakness, He is strong; in our temptations He is all-powerful; in our testings He is victorious. I will finish with the words of the Hebrew writer in 2:18. "Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted." Jesus is there for us.
