What's In Name

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins (Matt. 1:21).

Shakespeare in the play Romeo and Juliet had Juliet comment to Romeo, What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet."

It is a wonderfully quotable quote, and we can all understand what Juliet meant. What a common thing a name is. The Johnsons, Smiths, Browns, and Jones of the world have very common names while others are not so common. Names become special to us, no matter whether common or not, when a personal interest or love becomes attached to them. A "common" name is transformed into a special one, and none other "smells as sweet."

The name Jesus was a rather common name in His time. He was just one of many Jesus'. When he became popular and started drawing very large crowds, though, the name of Jesus took on a more special meaning. It started to get sweeter. People wanted to be around the one who was doing miracles...The one named Jesus. Matthew tells us that His name had a deeper meaning to it. "and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

What kind of name is it? It is a kingly name! "And gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth" (Phil.2:9-10). What kind of name is it? It is an everlasting name! "Your name, O Lord endures forever, your renown, O Lord, through all generations" (Ps. 135:13). What kind of name is it? It is a name of power! "Salvation is found in no one else, for their is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

What kind of name is it? It is the name we bear every day as Christians. As Jesus brought honor and glory to His name, we must do so also. We bear the name not to keep it to ourselves, but to share it with others.

To some today, Jesus is still just a name. But we know better. Why? Because we have come to know Him and love Him....How Sweet....

Have a wonderful start to your week....Let your light shine for Him...Love mark Phil. 4:11
