Striving For Purity

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matt. 5:8).

I'm not exactly sure what pure means, but there are some interesting implications in this verse from the Beatitudes. This section of the Sermon on the Mount are principles for "happy living." As a matter of fact, some translations use the word happy instead of blessed.

So, what is a "pure heart?" This we know. Jesus is talking about more than the heart as an organ in our body. I believe that the heart here is referring to the whole being. It is about our mind, personality, and will....Our whole person from the inside out.

How does one obtain a pure heart? I think we gain purity through the blood of Jesus when we take Him as our Savior. The pure heart, is from the heart of God. It is not a perfect heart, but it is a sincere one. It is not pious, but it is honest. It is not hypocritical but genuine and real. It is a heart who's motives are pure, who's intentions are pure, who's desires are pure. It is a heart who's will is submissive to the will of our Lord.

The promise that Jesus gives us here is that the pure of heart will see God. Jesus said in John 14:9, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father." A pure heart is essential to a vision of God. In order to view what we WANT to see, we must know what we are looking for. We have to focus! Have you ever been handed a pair of binoculars that someone else has just looked though? If you view the same thing, you will probably have to focus them to accommodate your vision. The Hebrew writer in 12:2, tells us to "fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfector of our faith." Our focus must be on Jesus and Jesus alone.

If we are able to stay focused on Him in our daily walk, He will fill our vision, and keep our hearts pure. It is when we allow ourselves to be distracted by the things about us that would draw us away that our purity is in jeopardy.

Ultimately, Jesus is our way to God. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God," also means that one day we will see Him face to face, in His completeness. What a great day that will be. It is for the pure of heart.

Have a wonderful day...Make a difference...Love mark Phil. 4:11
