So...What's Valuable To You?

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had a bought it" (Matt. 13:45&46).

On August first of this year, John Rogers of North Little Rock,AR, bought a baseball card. It was not just a card though. It was the "Holy Grail" of baseball cards, the 1909 Honus Wagner T206 card. Although the card was rated PSA 5, (graded 1 to 10) he paid 1.6 million dollars for a piece of cardboard, 1 1/2 inches wide by 2 3/4 long. He said at the purchase, "I was prepared to go much higher, and am pleased with my investment." I guess you had to be there!

So, what's valuable to you? I once preached a sermon in which I posed the question, "If your house was on fire and you could go back in just one time, what would you bring out?" In this world where a premium is put on "things," often the things of really great value are put on hold so that accumulation of earthly baubles can be done. We may have a hobby of some sort that we invest money in. I actually do collect baseball memorabilia. We all want to be comfortable with our homes, cars, clothing and food. Please don't imply that I want all of us to live a completely austere life with no frills at all.

But what is really valuable when all is said and done? In the parable and the one that precedes it about the treasure hidden in the field, Jesus focuses in on real value. It is the gaining of the kingdom of heaven. All will be lost in our lives if we are lost. All the gain, all the work, all the effort, will have been in vain.

I believe that the cornerstone of understanding things of great value is in Matthew, chapter 6. In the beginning of the chapter, Jesus talks of not laying up treasures here on earth, but rather treasures in heaven. He goes on to say that we cannot serve both God and money. He then talks about fretting over what we eat, drink or wear. The crowning verse for me is 33. We all know it and can probably quote it. "But seek first the kingdom of heaven, and all these things will be given to you as well."

We need to go where our heart is and find that which is really valuable. Have a great day...Let your light shine for Him....Love mark Phil. 4:11
