The Proof Is In The Pudding

"If anyone considers himself to be religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless" (James 1:26).

The term in my title today actually comes from the book Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. The actual expression is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." I believe this bit of wisdom to mean that the true value of something is only found when it is put to the test. As a science teacher for many years, my students favorite things were to do lab experiments. They may have liked them because they had a little bit more freedom in the class, but the real value was in the proving of the concepts that we were reading about. There was SO MUCH MORE credence to the theory when it was proven in experimentation.

There is a "pudding-proof" of life too. It is determined by how we live after we are impacted by the Word of God. Earlier in the book of James in verse 22 he tells us, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." Fortunately for us, the Word of Truth itself tells us what we will see when it is implanted and at work in our lives. In our scripture today James tells us that the one in whom the Word is at work, will have a tight rein on his tongue, have a clear and honest heart, and live a life that effectively demonstrates what he or she believes.

The next verse does some clarification. It tells more of the pudding-proof. True religion is one of service. In James day, the widows and orphans were the helpless ones. It is one of doing AFTER hearing. Ultimately it tells us, "to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."

The book of James is the famous college course, "Religion 101."

In today's world maybe we would call it, "Religion For Dummies."(obviously written to me!)

It is very practical and down to earth. If you have a minute or two today, read over James 1:19-27. It has such practical advice to make us better Christians. After all, the proof of the pudding IS in the eating....

Have a great Thursday.....Make a difference....Love mark Phil. 4:11
