Doing The Word

"Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says" (James 1:22)

James in this verse, and actually in his whole treatise, places the responsibility for Christian living squarely on the shoulders of those who hear the Word. The individual's response to God has not been predetermined from eternity. No one is fated to a way of life. Simple put, people make choices, and then live with those choices. As recounted by Jesus in the Parable of the Sower, people respond differently. Some may hear the Word and turn away. Some may hear it and believe it, but pay it no mind. A person may believe that Jesus is the Son of God, but may fail to keep himself from "being polluted by the world." (v27)

James states that there just isn't anything noble about faith unless it is accompanied by obedience and action.. He puts it simply and succinctly; "Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. DO WHAT IT SAYS! (my caps) Paul in the Book of Romans, (1:18- 2:29) presents reasoning and evidence to show that people are lost in sin. Without Christ, all are separated from God. What Paul establishes is the premise from which James works. Granted that all are lost in sin... Here's the remedy.... People are saved by the humble doing of the Word. Superficial hearing is of no benefit. The Word must be implanted as a pacemaker is implanted under one's skin to aid the heart in doing it's work. The Word that is imbibed is able to save the soul.

Like many of the prophets before Him, James loves to use illustrations. He likens superficial hearing in vs 23-25, to a man looking into a mirror, (always sobering) going away and forgetting what he saw. If he turns away and makes no improvement, why did he bother look in the first place? We must see ourselves reflected in the Word and understand that we need it in our daily lives. Superficial hearing and superficial faith, is forgetting what we see and failing to improve and enrich our lives with the Word.

The measure of how one hears and what one believes is the effect of the Word on our lives....Doing the word...

Have a great start to your week....Make a difference Love mark Phil. 4:11
