"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful" (Col. 4:2).

After hearing some good news about my father-in-law last night, I felt the need to write about prayer. If you were being incarcerated for something, and either the charges against you were false or didn't merit incarceration, what would you be writing about? Maybe the false charges? Maybe the injustice? How about, "can you get me out of here?" Paul, in prison while writing to the Colossians, asked them to "devote yourselves to prayer." He gives his reason in v4, "that God may open a door for our message."

Paul realized that the power needed to make his service an effective one, was fueled by prayer. We are not instructed to pray when it is convenient, but rather to "devote yourselves to prayer." When we devote ourselves to something, what will our actions be? They will of course be a dedication to the path we have decided to pursue. Devoting ourselves to prayer comes from the Greek term, meaning to persevere earnestly. Our communication with God must be a part of our daily fiber.

We are not to get tired of praying but rather be earnest and steadfast in it, "being watchful and thankful." Paul gives this advice in 1 Thess. 4:18. "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." The Psalmist tells us in 46:1, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble." Regardless of circumstances, we are told to give thanks...To give thanks IN EVERYTHING, not for everything. We are to give thanks simply because it is the will of God for us to do so. If there are things on our hearts today, lets let God know about them. If a loved one is hurting, lets petition for him. If we have been blessed beyond expectation, lets let God know in thanks. If there is a lesson we have learned, lets thank Him for the wisdom.

As we thank Him for all that is happening in our lives, the pleasant as well as the unpleasant, He can turn them into blessings. Thanking God can lift us above our circumstances. On a personal note, thank you God for being with dad.

Have a wonderful day...Let your light shine for Him......Love mark Phil. 4:11
