The Gentleness Of Wisdom

"But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and hypocrisy" (James 3:18).

All of us know a lot of smart people. We probably have said about some intelligent person we know...."Boy he's smart, but doesn't have an ounce of common sense".

So what is being smart, or as today's scripture says, having "wisdom", all about. James certainly tells us in no uncertain terms. He says that wisdom from God produces peace and good will among brothers and sisters. Thoughts and words and behavior that result in strife are not from above. James urged his readers to identify these wisdom traits that are desirable by the fruits they produce.

When one's wisdom consists of that which he learns from God, it exudes from him in the kind of behavior that James lists here. Just look at the list in this verse. Look at the qualities of real wisdom from above. These are the traits that real Godly wisdom should produce....pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, and without hypocrisy. I think the essence of what James is saying here is that wisdom is the knowledge and the resulting behavior that allows one to live an enjoyable and satisfying life.

James here however keeps one of wisdom's manifestations for special emphasis. He says that a Christian may measure the degree to which God's wisdom reigns in his life by the observable peace that it produces....Yes...PEACE..In our everyday life, we have contact with all kinds of people. The world can be a complicated and frustrating place sometimes. How we deal with it says much about whether our wisdom is from above. Peace is the outcome of divine wisdom.

Finally, I think the fruit produced in us is righteousness. Righteousness is not an abstract standing we have with God, but rather righteousness is peace. Righteousness is the good behavior that manifests itself in deeds of gentleness and peace. Peace to you this morning.

Have a great start to your week....Make a difference...Love mark Phil. 4:11
