A Help For Sleepless Nights

"On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night" (Ps.63:6).

I used this verse two weeks ago in a sermon on the discipline of meditation. David was an intense "meditator". Have you spent a night when sleep just eluded you? Did your thoughts start to wander about? That's what usually happens to me. Pretty soon we are reminiscing with ourselves and memories flood our minds. Its as if our memory is working overtime.

David was doing some of that reminiscing here. In verse three he said, "Because your love is better than life. my lips will glorify you". He goes on in a similar vein in verses four and five. David was remembering the times that God was so good to him, and contemplating His love and tenderness. He valued it more than life itself.

We can experience these same times with the Lord. In the seeming helplessness of certain situations in our lives, we, too can experience the loving and tender nature of our Lord. It is at these times that we can reminisce...Reminisce about all that God has done and is doing for us.

So often when we cannot sleep, the thoughts turn to worry..Pretty soon our minds have become occupied with all of our problems, and we get "wider awake". David learned a great way to spend these sleepless times...."On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. His sleeplessness turned into meditation, and the meditation turned to joy.

I believe this to be a wonderful way for us to get closer to our God on a sleepless night, or any night. Reflection on those ways that He has been so good to us will turn into meditation. In the quietness of the night, our thoughts will turn to our blessings if we let them. In this we can spend a sweet time with HIM...In the quietness of the night we can experience His peace...The peace that "transcends all understanding". (Phil.4:7)

We have to be neither brilliant nor eloquent to meditate on the Lord. He is listening for what is on our hearts. Meditation does not depend on books, methodology, or even our own efforts...."May my meditation be pleasing to him as I rejoice in the Lord" (Ps104:34)....We are to meditate on Him...

Have a wonderful day....Let you light shine for Him....Love mark Phil. 4:11
