Who's Watching?

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men" (Col. 3:23).

Through our entire lives we have been working at one thing or another. One of my summer jobs during my college and post college days was pumping gasoline on the Atlantic City Expressway. For those of you out of NJ, we don't get to pump our gasoline here. It was not arduous work, but at busy times it was tiring and stressful. During the non-busy times we did something we called, "blending." That meant trying to look busy in case the boss stepped out and saw us.

As I read today's verse, I suffer some post-work guilt. When we read it it tells us that the work we do, whatever it may be, has a more significant audience than we might think. I believe that Christians must and should be the best workers out there! Why you ask? "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." This passage should help us to realize that in all things, we are working for the Lord. It does not matter who is or isn't watching our work....God IS watching! He is out there observing all that we do and the attitude with which we do it. We should work hard not just because someone is paying us to do the work, but because God is watching too. That the work we do is a service to Him also. That there is a reward for us beside the pay check. That we want God to see us "doing a good job."

"Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is Christ you are serving" (v24). Positive things will happen when we view our work with the attitude that God watching. Our attitude will improve and we will be happier. People will take notice that you are REALLY enjoying your work and wonder why. People will want to work with you, because your mood is a happy one.

Best of all, when we work with the attitude that God is in the audience, we will feel better about ourselves. We will come to the realization that our calling is a higher one and that our rewards are greater rewards. The old song in our hymnbook says, "We'll work till Jesus comes, and we'll be gathered home."

Have a wonderful and productive day....Make a difference Love mark Phil. 4:11
