Why God Gives

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the father of heavenly lights" (James 1:17).

We have all given and received gifts at one time or another. Birthday, Christmas, anniversary, or just for the fun of it...It gives a warm feeling to get a gift, especially if it is from someone we care for. The feeling is even warmer when we are the givers. Why is all of this so? It isn't about the gift is it? It isn't even about the giver or receiver. It is all about why the gift has been given.

According to today's scripture, God is the giver of all good gifts. The rest of the passage says; "who does not change like the shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the Word of Truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all He created."

I think God gives us these gifts for at least two reasons. First, He is a good and gracious God...He is our Father. Just the way we gave gifts to our children, because we are their mom and dad. We are good parents. Secondly, He gives so that those who receive the gifts will look to Him for loving fellowship in return. Not just the gift, but because of the reason it was given.

God treated the children of Israel this way. In Hosea 2:20 it says that He "betrothed Himself" to them, and later it says that He had given them the best of everything. He did this so that they would respond, "You are my God." Previously they had taken the gifts from God as though they were from the countries around them, and not turned to God in appreciation. God wanted them to comprehend that ALL came from Him. He wanted to say to them, "you are my people."

How do we feel when someone, especially someone we care for, is unappreciative of a gift? It makes us really bad doesn't it. How do we suppose God feels when we don't appreciate His gifts?

God provides for us and cares for us so that we will look to Him with love and affection. He gives us all we need so that we will seek for a meaningful fellowship with Him. Just as we feel under appreciated when a gift given in love is just sloughed off, so the Lord is. When we take all the good things we get from God, especially the gift of His Son, and fail to fellowship with Him, we just don't "get it."

Simply put, God gives so that those who receive will look to Him for a loving fellowship. God has certainly given, are we doing our part?

Have a wonderful day...Let your light shine for Him...Love mark Phil. 4:11
