Being A Dues Paying Member Of "The" Union

"Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace" (Eph. 4:3).

For all the years of my youth, my mom worked in what we then called a dress shop. I look at it now as a "sweat shop." I can't even imagine how bad the conditions might have been if it was not for the union (IWGWU) of which she was a member. She got a small periodic "raise," a small pension, and even part of her funeral was paid for by the union.

God wants us to be a part of a brotherhood, a union if I may use that term. It is for our good and has all kinds of benefits. If we understand the nature of God, we can comprehend why God wants us to be in this union. This union is the church, the body of Christ. All of us have something to give to this union. The contribution we make is necessary for the body to function as it should.

Even in a group where our goals are similar, all of us differ in many ways. In actuality, these differences will help the union rather than hinder it. First Corinthians twelve speaks so clearly about "one body....many parts." It talks about how each part helps to allow the Body to function as it was designed to function. For the Body to reach its highest potential, all of the various parts must work together.

In today's political races, health care is a hot topic. For those of us who have it through our jobs, we know how important it is. In the body, we exist to provide care for each other. "so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other (1 Cor. 12:25). It is a "health care" of its very own...."Spiritual Health Care." The building up of the Body ought to be based on the love that we have for one another. That concern, based on our love, ought to move us to be of service to each other...It is a priority!

One of the ways for the union to get stronger is for it to spend more time together. In the book of Hebrews there is a verse that tells us "not to forsake the assembly" (10:25).

More important than this verse is the one immediately preceding it. It says, "let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." As the Body meets together, at least part of the reason is to have the desire to make one another better.

In the Broadway Show Wicked there is a beautiful song entitled "Because I Knew You." Some of the words are both lovely and touching. It says that in close relationships we leave a "handprint on one another's heart." The words that get to me the most however are, "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." What a delectable thought. Within the union we have the power to change one another for the better if we have the love and concern that we ought to.

I will write a little more about this on Monday...Have a wonderful weekend, and a fantastic worship tomorrow. May you be uplifted and the Lord be glorified...Let your light shine for Him.....Love mark Phil. 4:11
