Praying In The Three S's

"Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thess. 5: 16-18).

Something we talked about in my teen class the other night was the "when" of praying. I asked if there were typical times, situations, or events that are more likely to cause you to pray. Stuff like sickness and long trips came up. It is kind of funny that prayer has become so regulated to before meal times and bed that the thought of prayer makes our stomachs rumble or eyes get heavy...

Just to interject, there is precedent for praying before meals (Luke 24:30) or in the late night (Luke 22:39; Mark 1:35). What about those that DRIVE us to prayer. The things that find us really needing help that we can't find on our own. I could have used a favorite quote on prayer from Abraham Lincoln in my list yesterday. He said, "I have been driven many time to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had no where else to go."

I would like to look at some of the things that James writes about in James 5:13-16, as to the "when" of prayer....The three S's....Suffering, sick, and sinful...When do we pray besides those "normal" times and situations? Well literally any time---but specifically when we are suffering with the burdens of life, sick with the weakness of the body, or ashamed of our sins.

If we look at prayer ONLY at the times of the three S's, we will be praying a lot. Now you can probably think of other instances that prayers are needed, but I have just given you a little food for thought here. For young people it may be in the selecting of a college. For those of us who have lost loved ones, for the comfort of the Lord at this sad time. The three S's give us a starting point that we can branch out from as our prayer life becomes fuller and richer.

Pretty soon, we may find ourselves talking to God for no reason at all, but that we are enjoying it. Won't that be something now....

Have a wonderful weekend and an uplifting and glorifying worship service on Sunday....Let your light shine for Him....Love mark Phil. 4:11
