Love Is Cool

"And now these things remain; faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love (1 Cor. 13:13).

The writer of Ecclesiastes says that there "is a time for love." (3:8)...Love makes the world go round...Love is a many splendid thing....All you need is love....I love the Lord....Jesus loves me....You probably know dozens of songs wrapped around the theme of love.

Love is the theme most frequently used in songs, both spiritual and secular. It is simply "cool" to exalt love. Although we sing "Jesus loves me this I know," and "I love the Lord, He has been so good to me," we must also stop to consider our love for those around us. If we read Ephesians 3:18, we can find the dimensions of Christ's love as to width, depth, height, and length. Our love for others must also be full and complete.

The Bible give us some really good "measurement scriptures" concerning love. Among the best of these are in 1 Corinthians 13, our symposium for love in the New Testament. Written by Paul as a reaction to the misuse and jealousy over spiritual gifts, it continues through the ages as a cornerstone for our love. It's description of love shows it as something active and always at work.

"Love is patient, kind, not jealous, doesn't brag, isn't arrogant, acts right, isn't conceited, isn't easily provoked, doesn't take into account a wrong suffered, doesn't rejoice in unrighteousness, rejoices in truth......bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things.

Here's the test to find out if our love really measures up. Insert your name before each attribute of love that I just wrote down. Then see which ones are traits that we really do measure up to and which ones we don't. We are now aware of our deficiencies. How did you measure up? I know that I have a lot of work to do! The next few devotionals will be about love. The who, the why, and the how much....

Have a great day....Let your light shine for Him....Love mark Phil. 4:11
