Spiritual Ambiguity

"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it (Jer. 17:9)?

I am guilty! I am an outwardly emotional person. I "tear up" easily. I have been known to cry at weddings, funerals, baptisms, and at the end of the movie "Field of Dreams." Some would look at that and say, "Oh what a sensitive man." It may or may not be true, but in reality our outward emotions are just that....An outward display. The person who is more stoic in his reactions may be just as sensitive, but not show it outwardly.

When it comes to spirituality, emotionalism is never a safe guide. Alot may be said about a person regarding the things he laughs or cries about, but they may have nothing to do with spirituality. In a deep emotional state, one may be confused that he is having an experience with God and really be having an experience with himself.

In Star Wars III Revenge of the Sith, that point is graphically made. Anakin Skywalker constantly received guidance from one or another of the "good guys." The Jedi master tells him to "trust his feelings." The trouble was that the evil Chancellor Palpatine also told him to "trust his feelings." In the end he trusted the wrong feelings and turned into an evil monster. Many Christians may slide down a slippery road when too much emphasis is put on emotionalism, and not enough on the truth of God's Word.

No don't get me wrong....Emotions are God-given and are a completely appropriate part of being human. I think though, that God is more interested in our attitudes. Our attitudes may indeed illicit an outward emotion, but the attitude is what lasts. The emotions are transient, short-lived, and can change quickly. True Christian character is FIRM! Spirituality comes from conviction, not titillation. Our Christian attitudes go to our emotions and beyond. They represent a commitment to do what is right despite how we may "feel at the time." More tomorrow...

Have a great beginning to your week....Make a difference... Love mark Phil. 4:11
