The Joy Of The Spirit

"But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Against such things there is no law" (Gal:5:22 & 23).

I believe this to be Paul's synopsis about spirituality. Notice that the word fruit is singular. To me this means that these nine traits are a part of one thing. That one thing is a spiritual person. A life committed to the Good News of Jesus, is one that is under the control of the Holy Spirit. This surely goes beyond emotion. It goes to commitment. A commitment to do what is right! To do what is right despite "how we feel" at a particular time.

To the Thessalonians Paul wrote, "having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the spirit" (1 Thess. 1:6). Their joy, despite the problems they were having, came through the Word. It was the "joy of the spirit."......Spiritual Joy!

Jesus demonstrated this joy in the face of tribulation of affliction, in going to the cross. The Hebrew writer in Heb. 12:3 says, "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." The joy that Jesus felt was not one of either exuberance or emotion. I am sure that the emotion He felt at the time was a deep misery. The joy was an attitude of burning conviction which could not be shaken. It could not be moved even by the darkest of emotions. Even the emotion of the fear of a horrible impending death. Jesus dealt with the cross because He knew the truth of the resurrection.

To be spiritual then is to have a conviction that is strengthened and informed by the truth of God. Because the Spirit is the source of revealed truth (John 16:13), the association of spirituality and faithfulness should not come as a surprise. Though our emotions may be both powerful and heartfelt, being spiritual is not a factor of those emotions which engender our feelings. It is the Truth that empowers our convictions.

Have a great day....Let your light shine for Him.. Love mark Phil. 4:11
