Church of Christ

Peace, Perfect Peace

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 5:1).

Against our backdrop of Iraq, Iran, Israel, Afghanistan and Pakistan, we find Paul writing these words to the church at Rome. He is saying something profound to us here. I think he is saying that the answer to peace with my fellow man (even personal conflicts), peace with my brother, peace with my struggles, and even peace with my own guilt, lies in the understanding the concept of peace with God.

The first words of Jesus as an adult were spoken at a synagogue in Nazareth in the 4th chapter of Luke. In verse 9 he paraphrases Isaiah 61 about the "Year of Jubilee" (Lev. 25:8-55). In this year all debts are canceled, slaves freed, and ancestral property is returned to the original owners. This is the beginning of Jesus' public ministry and is referred to later in Luke and in Acts as evidence that He is the Christ. In verse 19 Jesus proclaimed, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

The Day of Jubilee was a day of liberty. Jesus told us here that through Him we have liberty. This liberty was more than a release from physical difficulties....It is a metaphor for forgiveness from sins. This liberty is FOR ALL! The poor, blind, captive, oppressed and lost. "The Son of Man has come to seek and save the lost" (Lk.19:10)......"and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Peace through liberty!

These verses serve as a bridge to Paul, who in his teachings elaborated on why humanity was in need of salvation and how it was provided. Peace comes only when we are assured of our salvation. "The peace of God that transcends all understanding." More about the peace of God tomorrow.

Have a wonderful day.....Make a difference...Sow peace.. Love mark Phil. 4:11
