Peace With God

"We came in peace for all mankind" (Plaque left on the moon by Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969). Have you ever looked at the moon through a telescope? It is so fascinating, so peaceful. Why is it so peaceful? The reason should be obvious...There are no people there! Wherever people go, peace is endangered. It is no different when God is involved. We struggle at times finding peace with Him also.

Romans 5:1 tells us that "we have peace with God." So why the struggle? To ever understand peace with God, we must come to understand enmity with Him. That's right, being His enemy. Peace between two nations or even between two people is often lost when one or the other breaks an agreement made between the two. All of us have done that to God. It is called sin. "As it is written, there is no one righteous, not even one" (Rom. 3:10)..."For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3:23).

Because God is good, He is also just. Even though He is a merciful, God's nature demands that sin is His enemy. "God is light, in Him is no darkness" (1 John 1:5). If God is a righteous judge, then sin must be punished. Would we want to live in a society where crime goes unpunished? There would be anarchy. No one would ever be accountable for anything they did. If a just God does not punish sin, He ceases to be just.

I have just painted a rather bleak picture. STILL! Against this backdrop that we know to be so, Paul writes in Romans 5:1, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God." How you ask? Lets read the rest...."Through our Lord Jesus Christ."
