Lookin' For The Fastball

"Now those were more noble-minded than those in Thessolonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11).

After three devotionals about parables, I find myself continuing to lean on illustrations in an attempt to make things clearer and a bit more interesting. It has been said that a lesson without illustrations is like a room without windows. Having played baseball into my mid-50s, its seems natural for me to draw on my knowledge of it to illustrate things. If you are a "fan" of the game, you may enjoy it, if not, maybe I can "convert" you."

The "higher level" of baseball one plays, the better the pitchers are. 90+ mph fastballs, exploding curves, and tricky changeups, all designed to fool or overpower the batter. What's a poor hitter to do? In a word....Guess! And if you guess wrong you are forced to react. In many phases of life we make guesses. We may call them "educated guesses" or even "informed decisions," but they are what they are...Guesses. From what college to attend to what investment to make.....What toaster or car to buy...They are indeed guesses..If we make the wrong choices, we must adjust. (react?)

In other phases of life, guessing is not so acceptable. The Bereans mentioned in today's verse, did not leave "the word they received with great eagerness" up to guesswork. Rather, they "examined the scriptures daily to see whether these things were so." If we are to find the truth that will make us free, there should be no guessing involved. The words of Jesus are Words of Life and should be examined diligently.

As Joshua was nearing the end of his productive life he proclaimed to the people, "choose for yourselves today whom you will serve.....but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord"....."We will also serve the Lord, for He is our God." (Josh. 24: 16 & 18). We always have choices to make when it comes to whom we will serve, but it should not be guesswork.

"Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving" (Ps. 95:2)...

Have a great day...Make a difference....Love... mark Phil. 4:11
