Really Important Stuff III - Pleading With Others

"And now I beseech thee lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another" (2 John 5) KJV.

What does "beseech" actually mean. It is a pleading on the part of John. The word carries a kind of urgency with it. This is a message that just cannot wait...It demands immediate attention, not as something new, but something necessary. Peter uses the same type of language in his 2nd epistle.."I think it is right to stir you up by reminding you"....."I write to you this 2nd both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder" (2 Peter 1:13 & 3:1).

If you are a parent, have you ever thought something was so important to your children that you felt it was necessary to "stir them up" toward the correct decision? If we think something is important enough a plea is in the equation. There are some principles that are of such great magnitude that we ought to plead with others to accept them. Just because we've heard them once and have tentatively accepted them, doesn't mean that they should not be stressed again and again.

Is our preacher "that good" that we are willing to listen to a message every week? Is he concerned for our spiritual well-being? The apostle Paul was when he wrote, "Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men" (2 Cor. 5:11). Trying to persuade, beseeching and stirring up, are all indicators that we care for the spiritual lives of others.

We should learn a lesson from John about what is important enough to make a plea for and make the plea. Make a plea with not only words, but with actions. There are some things important enough that they just cannot wait....

Share the light....Love mark Phil. 4:11
