The Ties That Bind

"May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and one mouth you may glorify the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 15:5 & 6).

These verses give us a vivid reminder of why we gather together. There is a special harmony in a "spirit of unity among ourselves." More important than having our needs gratified, is being joined together in the love of Christ, and expressing worship to God as one unified body.

In almost every church group there are special dynamics. Dynamics of age and maturity groups. We usually have the young, old and those in between. There are parents with young children and "empty nesters" like Jane and I. We ought to be encouraged in our strengths and overcome our weaknesses. The vitality of youth should encourage the older to continue in good works. The older ought to share their life wisdom with the young, having already faced the challenges of youth. It warmed my heart a few years ago when my younger son formed a special bond with one of our eight year old members. It was special to watch.

Paul writes to Titus, (Titus 2:1-8) about what the young and old have to offer each other. Unity and harmony were always at Paul the heart of his teaching. He wanted the Jews and Gentiles to put aside the things that divided them and be "one in Christ." (Eph. 2:21) When Peter withdrew from the Gentile Christians after men from James came from Antioch, Paul "opposed him to his face" (Gal. 2:11) Paul knew and wrote to them and us that there is to be unity and harmony in the body.

Its all about harmony...

"Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.

John Fawcett 1772
