Getting The Lift We Need

"Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in Him, for He shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders" (Deut. 33:13).

Do you remember as a young person having "chicken fights" at the beach? (OK, if you are an "inlander", at the lake or pool) You remember the game don't you? One person would get on another's shoulders and you would wade about waist deep into the water to begin the battle. The "fight" would begin as the ones on top would try to pull each other off the other's shoulders. The person on the bottom had to be strong and steady to support his load as the pulling and tugging went on.

I was listening to the contemporary song, "You Raise Me Up," the other day. It was one of the songs that was chosen to be played at Jane's mom's funeral service this past October. As the words kept going around and around in my head, I realized that they described one's personal walk with God. As God's children, we can find strength on His shoulders.

All of my children used to love to ride on my shoulders. As I read this verse and listen to this song, the reason makes itself evident. A child finds strength and security on his/her daddy's shoulders. He won't let them fall, and they are far above the crowd. God gives us that same strength and security as we go through our daily paces. He invites us to find the strength of His shoulders when we are troubled and need that strength.

What a wonderful, powerful and secure place to be....."and the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders."

"When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until You come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be."
