The Wind For Our Sails

"He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing" (Job 26:7)...."He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth" (Isa.40:22).

While men as late as the 15th century saw the earth as flat, these are God's descriptions over 3,500 years ago. How did the writers know to write this stuff?...Hmmmm..

As man constantly looks for something to "hang his hat on" in terms of guidance, I choose the Word of God. About 150 years ago in this country there was a religious movement called the "restoration." It was man's attempt at unity....A way to worship God as God had spoken through His inspired Word. I know that this is an area of controversy in the world today, but what is it that we are to accept?

I think it is up to us to accept the claims of the scriptures in all matters of faith and practice. There is also a time when it is also necessary to accept the silence of scripture. Simply because the Bible does not expressly forbid some practice, does not give us the liberty to do it. Where there is not authority, chaos rules. We need to have an authority for what we believe, touch and do.

Peter tells us that "holy men of God spoke as they were 'moved' by the Holy Spirit" (2 Pet.1:20). The word moved here is from the Greek word, "phero." It means being moved along as a boat is moved when its sails are filled with wind. The inspiration of God;s message provides the wind for our sails.

Those in the Restoration Movement looked for simplicity and unity. They looked to the solid foundation of God's inspired Word to provide the guidelines. They wanted all of us to stand under the umbrella of the Bible and be one in the Lord. I think what God wants of us is this. To believe in His inspired Word, to stand firm in the faith, and for all to be Christians.....Simply Christians...
