Remembering God

"I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will quickly perish from the land where you are going over the Jordan to possess it. You shall not live long on it but be utterly destroyed" (Deut.4:26).

The Israelite's 40 year journey across the wilderness is almost over. Moses is now reminding them of the miraculous way that the Lord had provided for them both physically and spiritually these past years. He retells how their enemies have been defeated and punished by God. Earlier in the chapter Moses reads to them from the law and urges them to obey. "You shall not add to the word I am commanding you"...."so keep and do them for this is your wisdom and understanding"...."Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently"....."Make no graven images"....

Moses warns them that their children and grandchildren will be subject to these same ordinances. He warns that if they disobey that the consequences will be dire. Why the constant warnings? Were these people just plain stupid? Is their memory so short as to forget God's mercy, grace, and sustenence over the past 40 years? If we read some of Moses' later words (Deut. 8) we will get the gist. "otherwise, when you have eaten and been satisfied, and built good houses and lived in them.....and when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all you have multiplies....then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord."

I think I get it now! But one more word from Moses..."Otherwise you may say in your heart 'MY power and the strength of MY hand has bought me all this wealth.' " We would be wise to listen, as they should have...Heaven and earth will be called to witness those who leave God out of their lives. In an affluent society its easy to get full and forget. Satan may have his most powerful weapon here. We may get so caught up in our success and so proud of our accomplishments, that we may be foolish enough to think we got here on our own. We are never to leave God out...

Have a wonderful day....Let your light shine brightly for Him...Less talk, more walk..Love mark Phil. 4:11
