Yeast Resistant

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up" (Jas. 4:10). We have a song in our song books, "Songs Of Faith And Praise," entitled, "Humble Yourselves in the Sight of the Lord." (#745) It has become one of my favorites. It echoes the sentiments of both James and Peter. "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time" (1 Pet. 5:6).

Yesterday I spoke about Jesus' double warning ( "Be careful...Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees") in Mark 8:15. Jesus was warning His disciples, and us, to avoid the Pharisee-like influences that would keep us from being the kind of Christians that He wants us to be. To be the type of Christians that Satan can't grab hold of and drag down. I know that I can't touch on all the things to do to avoid these pitfalls, so I have chosen just three.

First....Be humble! Proud and arrogant people are easy to spot. If they are easy to spot for us, they are a no-brainer for Satan. He can turn our lack of humility into having us do his bidding instead of Jesus'. Jesus epitomized humility in His life. Although He had it all, no one would have known it by His attitude. Through all He did, credit was always given to the Father. When we achieve, do we give our Lord the credit? That is a big part of being humble.. "I can do all things through CHRIST who gives me strength" (Phil. 4:13)!

Secondly, we need not to be dependent upon earthly approval and praise. "If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ" (Gal. 1:10). When our motivation is to please men instead of God, we might as well be walking around with a target on our back. Lets face it, all of have an ego. We just can't let the part of it that looks for constant earthly gratification to control us. Satan will use that attitude to have us do his work instead of the Lord's.

Thirdly, be sincere! "Encourage young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us" (Titus 2:6 & 7). False sincerity can always be spotted. Is there anything worse that someone who "drips" with false sincerity? If we can detect it, it's easy pickings for Satan. He will use the insincere person to drag others from Jesus.

You know those "child-resistant" medicine bottles we have in our homes? (I hope they're not adult-resistant) We need to be "yeast resistant." Resistant to those things that would hinder us on our Christian walk. Jesus gave a double warning...That's good enough for me...

Have a great day....Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
