Surrender - Not A Bad Word

"And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will" (2 Cor. 8:5).

We recently spent two days in Gettysburg, PA. As you know it was the site of a great Civil War battle, July 1-3 of 1863. Somewhere between 46,000 and 51,000 lives were lost here. There was a retreat, but no surrender.

In war terms, surrender means to yield or give in to the power of another. In war it means to lose. But surrender is not always a bad word. It can also mean to give in to the influence of another, and this does not have to be an onerous thing. Most of you can quote Matt. 6:33. It is about surrender. "But seek first his kingdom and righteousness." That means to surrender to Jesus' will. We know that this surrender is not bad because of the rest of the verse. "and all these things will be given to you as well." A surrendered life is first given over to Jesus. It is all about service to the Lord.

The surrendered life gives up everything to gain the kingdom as the parable of the great pearl in Matt 13: 45 & 46 explains. The life of surrender follows the example of Jesus when he prayed about the impending crucifiction. His conclusion in prayer was the same surrender to the will of God that He taught us. "Yet not my will, but yours be done." Paul also exemplified this life of surrender. "But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish that I might gain Christ" (Phil.3:7 & 8)....Now THATS surrender.

We have such hope and example as we consider the surrendered life. Jonah sailed in the other direction rather than surrender. Moses claimed incompetence. Both of them surrendered and the rest is history. Surrender to the Lord is what our life should be all about. The reward is victory!

Have a great day...Go about doing good....Love mark Phil. 4:11
