A Life Of Meaning

"As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work" (John 9:4).

Ben Franklin, always in search of useful knowledge, published Cicero's treatise on growing older, wiser, and more productive. One of ancient Rome's most powerful statesman, Cicero gave us words for both ethics and happiness. Written 2,049 years ago it is entitled, "On a Life Well Spent." That title has a nice ring to it , doesn't it...On a life well spent...

A Christian life ought to be one of meaning....It ought to be "well spent." If we have not gotten started on it yet, the time is now according to Jesus in today's verse. A life of meaning is one that is busy. In the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard the question is asked, "Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing" (Matt. 20: 9)? We need to be busy in the work of the Lord.

Along with being busy, a life of meaning wants to do things for others. (Matt.23:11) It wants to spread the good news of Jesus , whether in word or deed. (Heb.5 :12) It wants to lift those who are need of lifting. (Gal 6:1) It ought to be willing to bear each other's burdens. (Gal. 6:2) A life of meaning feels the need to visit and encourage the sick. (Matt. 25:31) It should be our brother's keeper. (Gen. 4:9) A meaningful life determines it priorities, and puts first things first. (Matt 6:33)

A life of meaning knows that all things come from the Lord and will one day return to Him. In Psalm 24:1, David writes, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." Our goods are His and we ought to use our money to His glory so that others may come to live this meaningful life.

"A life employed in the pursuit of useful knowledge, in honorable actions, and in the practice of virtue, yields an unspeakable comfort to the soul" (Cicero.... On a Life Well Spent)

Have a wonderful day....Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
