More Of Better Things In Hebrews

"You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions" (Heb. 10:34).

I would like to continue the thoughts of yesterday by talking about some of the "better things" in the book of Hebrews. As you might remember, the book was written (author unknown) to Jewish Christians who were under great pressure to return to Judaism and give up their belief in Jesus Christ. The writer emphasizes several things about the new covenant that are simply better. From today's verse we find a concept which is written about often in our New Testaments. It is the concept of possessions. Lets face it, some possessions just make our lives more comfortable. A nice home and car, good food and decent clothes to wear help to physically make our lives better. As long as we realize the temporary nature of these "things," all is well. Earthly possessions, though we strive mightily for them, are of little "real" value in the grand scheme of life.

The writer puts this thought in graphic perspective by saying that they could even deal with the confiscation of their property in light of a "better and lasting possession." Heaven is that better and more lasting possession.

"Instead, they were longing for a better country----a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them" (11:16). Chapter eleven speaks about the great faith of their fathers. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Rahab are evoked. The writer even makes a list of those "I do not have time to write about" (V32). God promised them a country much greater than the one they had. As they wandered across the desert with Moses, they anticipated that wonderful country. Now He is offering them and us a better country......A heavenly one! This is the desire of all believers. That there is a country to which we are going that surpasses all that we have experienced here on earth. No matter how good we have it, we will always suffer pains, heartaches, and disappointments here on earth. We are bound to a better country.

"In the land of fadeless day lies the city four-square;
It shall never pass away, and there is no night there.
God shall wipe away all tears; there's no death, no pain, no fears;
And they count not time by years, for there is no night there."

John Clements 1899
