Some Precious Things

"Now to you who believe, this stone is precious" (1 Pet. 2:7).

There are things in our lives that we hold precious. Some of them revolve around our families, both personal and extended. There even some "things" that on some level we think of as precious. The world even puts prices on things such as "precious gems" and "precious metals." Peter, in his two epistles lists some things that are precious to us as Christians.

The "stone" that Peter talks about here in today's verse is Jesus. Just as a picture of a loved one (who didn't like to show pictures of their children?) is precious to us and perhaps not to others, Jesus is only precious to those who believe in Him. The world is filled with men, but there is only one Savior. He should be precious to each of us. "For you know it was not with perishable things like silver and gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect" (1 Pet.1:18 & 19). The precious blood of Jesus takes away our sins and we are redeemed through it.

Peter tells again about the stone in 2:7. This time he calls it a living stone. Christ is a living stone, and we as believers are called "lively stones." (2:4 & 5). As a living stone, Christ provides the foundation of our life. The foundation on which we stand (1 Cor.3:11). Peter says in his second epistle (1:1), that through Jesus we have received a precious faith. It is this faith that is essential to our salvation. Paul says that it is obtained by the "Word of God" (Rom. 10:17).

Back in the first epistle Peter talks about the "trials of our faith" (1:7). Part of a true faith is that it will stand fast during hardship. It will also be verified through the good things that we do. You know, the walk along with the talk. Finally, Peter tells us, "Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises" (2 Pet 1:4). Think of the wonderful promises the Lord has made to us and their fulfillment. The greatest of all promises awaits us in eternity.

What a Mighty God we serve...One who has given us all of these precious things...

Have a great day....Go about doing good....Love mark Phil. 4:11
