Mary Magdalene - A Lesson Of Hope

"Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance" (John 20:1).

As I continue this series of devotionals leading up to Mother's Day, I am zeroing in on another famous woman in the Bible. Mary Magdalene. Because of many "fictitious" books and movies on the subject, Mary Magdalene has become something to people that she was not. What we do know for sure is that she loved the Lord. Not in the sordid sense that some would lead us to believe, but as the Savior of mankind. When she got to the tomb on that Sunday morning after Jesus burial, she found that the stone that had been placed in front of it had been removed. She ran to Peter and John to tell them the news. "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put Him" (V 2). When Peter and John arrived at the tomb, they went inside and confirmed her story while she remained outside weeping. She saw two angels who asked her why she was crying and, thinking that they were the gardeners, asked if they had taken Him away....Then she saw the risen Jesus! At first she didn't recognize Him, and when HE asked her why she was crying, her eyes were opened in recognition.

What we find here is that the disciples still did not understand from scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead. Mary Magdalene ran to them with two wonderful messages. "I have seen the Lord! And she told them that He had said these things to her" (V 18). Sorrow gave way to HOPE! The same HOPE that Mary Magdalene exuded when she told the disciples of the risen Jesus, is our HOPE. Just as their HOPE rested on the risen Savior, so does ours. Our HOPE today rests on the resurrected Savior and the ascended Lord.

Mary Magdalene found her sorrow overwhelming when she saw that Jesus' body was missing. That "missing body" has transformed us from hopeless to hopeful. Just as her spirit soared when she saw her Lord and heard His message, so ought we when we do likewise....

Have a great day...Go about doing good....Love mark Phil. 4:11
