Being On The Watch - Why Watch?

"Be on your guard; (watch) stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love (1 Cor. 16:13 & 14).

I guess I don't pay as close attention as an adult, but at all railroad crossings when I was a child there was a "STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN sign. We were taught that in our elementary schools and it was certainly reinforced at home. Being on guard or watching was all about our safety. God is interested in our spiritual safety today. We are commanded to watch! To Timothy Paul wrote that those around him would, "turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths" (2 Tim. 4:5). He put a big responsibility onto the shoulders of Timothy. He must be on the watch so the truth of the Lord was to be maintained.

Jesus told His disciples and us that He would have to leave this world. He told them that He would arise from the dead. All of this He accomplished. He also told them that He was now "in charge," and that He would one day return. "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or hour" (Matt. 25:13)....."No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father....Be on guard! Be on the alert!.....What I say to you, I say to everyone; Watch! (Mk. 13:32,33,37) Despite all the predictions...despite the translations of prophesies....Despite the supposed signs....Even the angels and the Son Himself do not know the time of His return.

With that in mind God wants us to be on the watch. His Son wants His people to be as pure as possible. Instead of looking for signs we ought to be constantly doing His good will in our lives. We ought to be careful not to enter into temptation. Jesus didn't tell Peter to watch for the second coming, but rather, "watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation" (Matt. 26:41). Peter later echoed those same sentiments when he wrote, "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a lion" (1 Pet 5:8).

Finally, we ought to be on watch so that we won't miss the opportunities we have to do good.(Gal. 6:10) They are all around us. Maybe it is just a visit, a note, a kind word or a small random act of kindness. Doing good is like practicing for at a sport, on a song or play...The more we practice at it, the better we get. So....Why watch? So that we won't miss all the good stuff of life....

Have a wonderful day....RAK someone today Love mark Phil. 4:11
